What Does Your ACL Do? It Stabilizes Your Knee
The knee is a complex joint made up of bones, ligaments, and tendons that work together. Your ACL runs through the center of your knee, connecting your femur to your tibia and providing stability. An ACL injury can cause your knee joint to lose stability, and your knee may give out from under you. Our doctors in Tijuana, Mexico, can assess the injury and perform ACL reconstruction.
The Benefits of Choosing Our Tijuana Practice For Your ACL Surgery
Arthroscopic Surgery
Our Tijuana, Mexico, orthopedic surgeon's office performs knee arthroscopy, meaning the entire surgery can be done through a few small incisions. This makes recovery faster and easier for patients, while also resulting in less scarring.
Thorough Care
Our orthopedic surgeons understand how the ligaments, tendons, and muscles all work together to allow movement of the knee. If you have another injury in addition to a torn ACL, we can provide treatment for that, as well, to get you back on your feet.

What Is ACL Reconstruction? A Brief Overview
/
For a grade 3 sprain, ACL surgery replaces the entire ligament with a graft (replacement tissue) taken from your muscle, a patellar or hamstring tendon, or from a donor (allograft). The graft will act as your new ligament and restore stability and function in your knee.
What To Expect During ACL Surgery
First, you will have a consultation with our orthopedic doctors to determine if the procedure is necessary. Imaging may be required to assess the degree of tear. If you need surgical treatment, you will come to our state-of-the-art facility in Tijuana, Mexico, to undergo surgery.
ACL surgery can help you get back to the activities you love.
ACL Reconstruction Has a High Success Rate
According to research reported in Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, grafts from a patient's own body and grafts of donor tissue have failure rates of just 6% and 7%, respectively. You can rest assured that ACL surgery will put you on the path to a proper recovery.
Care That's Safe and Thorough

Healing After Surgery Making the Most of Your Recovery
Manage Pain
Pain, swelling, and redness are all normal after ACL surgery. NSAIDs, cool compresses, and elevating your leg can help alleviate these uncomfortable symptoms. You can also use an ACL knee brace to minimize pain and swelling. These symptoms are temporary and should start to improve in about a week.
Use Crutches
While you will likely be able to put weight on your leg just 24 hours after your surgery, you should use crutches for about two weeks, and for longer if you had an additional injury like a torn meniscus that was repaired during your surgery. Crutches can help you move around while keeping weight off of your operated leg. Only put as much weight on this leg as you are comfortable with.
Attend Physical Therapy
Once you're cleared by your doctor, our Tijuana doctors recommend attending physical therapy or performing exercises at home. Physical therapy will help strengthen the muscles and tendons in your knee. It will also strengthen your hamstrings, which may help decrease your risk of another ACL injury. Performing a combination of balance, range-of-motion, and strengthening exercises, you'll be able to return to your regular activities sooner.
